'Media covering up the truth is the spokesperson of male domination' 2020-12-15 10:23:55   İSTANBUL - While Academician Ceren Sözeri told that the media justifies the violence against women by using headlines such as 'Man kills woman out of love', journalist Gülfem Karataş said: "We will not allow the media to be the spokesperson of male domination."   The male dominated media, one of the ideological apparatuses of the government, increases physical violence with their statements and expressions against women, while deepening gender inequality. Galatasaray University Communication Faculty Member Assoc. Dr. Ceren Sözeri and Turkey Journalists' Union (TGS) Women's LGBTI + Commission member Gülfem Karatas, spoke to our agency about the language of the media, inciting violence against women.   COVERING UP THE TRUTH   Stating that they saw that women were exposed to violence by the closest men in the table of violence and murder statistics, Sözeri said, "For this reason, news of murder and violence are usually given by highlighting the family relationship or the relationship between the male and the female. This dynamic in the cause and effect relationship is sought in that relationship. They justify the murders by using headlines such as 'Man kills woman out of love', 'Man kills woman for unrequited love'. Stating that the media should take action before the women are murdered, Sözeri said: "It is a very serious political problem. Five, six women are being murdered on a daily basis. We must approach the issue as a serious political problem. We must write about these incidents, the trial process, the protests of the women as well as where to apply when a woman is subjected to violence, where they can get help."   LANGUAGE MUST CHANGE   TGS Women and LGBTI+ Commission Member Gülfem Karataş pointed out that the media is another front to fight against violence for women. Explaining that there are many factors in the fight against violence, Karataş stated that the struggle will be interrupted if one of them is missing and added: “The media, which has to look out for the values of the society while reporting, has to be aware about the gender inequality. If we are talking about the power of the media, the language of men and women in the media should also change. "   WOMEN'S JOURNALISM   karataş also drew attention to the socializing hate speech and emphasized the importance of the struggle of the women in the media. Karataş continued as follows: “The most important duty of journalists is to destroy the language of hate and to defend peace and coexistence in the society. However, women journalists in particular have a great responsibility against the news that the pro-media media serve in a misogynistic and discriminatory language. We will fight against the language of the media until the language of hate disappears. We will not let the news that the media serve through the language of hate become the spokesperson of male-domination."
