Journalist Rojin Altay sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison 2023-09-14 16:07:50   ISTANBUL - In the case where Yeni Yaşam newspaper employee Rojin Altay was tried, she was sentenced to 1 year and 3 months in prison, citing social media posts.   The first hearing of the case filed against Yeni Yaşam newspaper employee Rojin Altay, who was released after being detained at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport on January 28, 2022, on the allegation of "being a member of an organization", was held at the Istanbul 22nd High Criminal Court. While Altay did not attend the hearing, her lawyer Özcan Kılıç was present.   The prosecution, which took the floor first at the hearing, stated that there was no request for further investigation and noted that the opinion on the merits was ready. The opinion was then presented to the court.   OPINION HAS BEEN PREPARED   In the opinion, it was requested that Altay be punished, citing social media posts as a reason. In the opinion made regarding the accusation of Kurdish politician Sakine Cansız, who was murdered in Paris, for retweeting the photo containing the phrase "Resistance is life", it was claimed that Altay made "organization propaganda" with this post and asked to be punished within the scope of TMK 53/1.   1 YEAR 3 MONTHS PENALTY   Announcing its decision, the court sentenced Altay to 1 year in prison, which is the lower limit, for the allegation of "propagandizing for an organization", and later increased the sentence to 1 year and 6 months on the grounds that the "crime" was committed through social media. Finally, the court, which applied a "good behavior" reduction, reduced the sentence to 1 year and 3 months and decided to postpone the announcement of the verdict.
