Dr. Ekmez: Prison doors should be opened to independent health units 2019-01-15 11:30:08 İSTANBUL- Member of Board of Directors of Istanbul Chamber of Medicine Dr. Murat Ekmez said  hunger striker prisoners needs 5 glasses of water a day, 5 tablespoons sugar, 2 teaspoons of salt, 1 teaspoon of carbonate and vitamin B1 containing vitamin supplement. Ekmez said it is imperative that the prisons doors be opened to independent health units. The hunger strike initiated by HDP Hakkari Deputy Leyla Güven with thte demand of terminating the isolation on PKK Leader Abdullah Öcalan ia in its 69th day today. The number of 228 prisoners who are in an indefinite non-rotating hunger strike is increasing on a daily basis.   Member of Board of Directors of Istanbul Chamber of Medicine Murat Ekmez made assesments about what the hunger strikers should consume and the critical stages of the hunger strikes.   Ekmen warned: " A person in hunger strike might not get enough fluids due to the nausea and vomiting after a stage. Then comes an increase in heartbeat, losing balance, low blood pressure until the hunger strike is bedbound. Then, because of this condition, sometimes the fluid that is consumed might go to the lungs causing an infection which can lead to death.   Leyla Güven is in a hunger strike for 69 days now. We know that she could not attend to her mothers funeral or meet with her attorneys because of her health. According to the latest information, we know that she has a fever. We don't know that this fever is caused by the infection in the lungs. We don't know who is following up on her health as a doctor in the prison, or if the prison can manage this situation. Therefore, Diyarbakır Chamber of Medicine have made an application for establishing an independent committee to follow up on Güven and the other prisoners in hunger strike. But the Ministry of Justice have rejected it. This week Turkish Medical Association made another application. We are waiting for a response. The government, and the Ministry of Justice must open the prison doors to independent committees at once."
