5 people in Gebze Prison who are on a hunger strike are detoriorating 2019-03-14 14:35:11   KOCAELİ- Journalist Meltem Oktay stated that 5 of the hunger strikers are detoriorating in Gebze Type M Prison.   Journalist Meltem Oktay, a reporter of Dicle News Agency (DİHA) which was closed down with a law decree, relayed information about the ongoing hunger strike in Gebze Type M Closed Prison. Oktay who spoke with her family on the phone, said the health of 5 prisoners on hunger stike, Hacer Halil Yusuf, Ruhşan Bozan, Özlem Özdemir, Ayten Gülsüm and Özlem Söyler are detoriorating.   Oktay said: "The hunger strikers who started with the first group lost weight around 8-10 kilos. Their blood pressures are low and pulses are weak. They have acute headaches, muscle and joint pain. They suffer from nausea, fever and exhaustion. Their sensitivity to light and smell are increasing. They have balance issues when they walk. They are talking really slowly."   Oktay who emphasized that the prison doctors come for checks twice a week, said: "The doctors want to refer them to the hospital. The hunger strikers reject going to the hospital and any possible intervention. Oktay who mentioned that the vitamins B1 and B2 are not being given to the hunger strikers from day one, said water, lemons, sugar and salt which are vital for a hunger striker are being given limited as well.   Oktay said as of March 1, 31 new prisoners joined the hunger strike.   Oktay also underlined that the New Life Newspaper is not being given to the prisoners because it gives moral support.
