Birdal stated that Ankara should read the peace message of PKK Leader Abdullah Öcalan carefully. Ex MP and Humans' Rights Association (İHD) Honorary President Akın Birdal evaluated the decision of ending the hunger strikes upon Öcalan's call and said Leyla Güven has assumed a historical mission.   Birdal, speaking about Öcalan's message saying 'Social consensus, democratic politics, discussion of democracy and honorable peace negotiations is the issue of Turkey's basic needs', said: "I think Ankara should read this carefully. Birdal said: "Social peace has now come to a point that cannot be postponed. Building a democratic, reconciled peaceful society should be the responsibility of all those who assume duties and obligations on behalf of this country. In this process, the parliament should be authorized to democratize and a new page should be opened. Otherwise, the solutionlessness of this problem creates discrimination, hatred and polarization in every part of society inevitably and this is an inevitable cause of poverty."
