MARDİN - Since the attack Turkey started against North and East Syria on October 9, 2019, internet networks are restricted on grounds of security measures.

 

The internet networks and mobile internet services are restricted in Mardin's Nusaybin district on grounds of security measures.In the city where Turk Telekom and Vodafone is almost unusable and Turkcell is mostly restricted, social media web sites and chat applications like whatsapp and telegram can not be used via normal lines. While internet is restricted on mobile phones in Nusaybin, those who leave near the border to Qamishlo can not even use their phones. The internet restriction also effects those who have to use EBA Tv for distant education put in effect due to the Covid- 19 outbreak.

 

The people living in the city has to use VPN that provides virtual private networks. The GSM operators people got in touch with to solve the problem, said the restriction is due to the 'security measures' and recommend people to use VPN. The customer service of GSM operators suggests that the problem has been identified, but they are investigating the cause.

 

NO INTERNET WITHOUT VPN

 

Stating that they can not go online without VPN for more than a year, high school student Yusuf Aslan said the restriction was because they live in a border town. Aslan said: "We can not connect to the social media or our EBA lessons."

 

IT IS JUST LIKE THE 90'S

 

Educators in the city avoid expressing their opinion on the problem. HDP Nusaybin District Co-chair Şiyar Koç said that the problem started with attacks on Northern and Eastern Syria, and that even normal phone calls could not be made in areas located on the border line. Expressing that the people could not get service despite paying their bills, demanded the problem to be solved.

 

Recalling that they used double satallite antennas during the 90's to be able to watch TV, Koç said it was just like the 90's and asked if this was their fate.
