İSTANBUL -  İHD İstanbul Branch President Gülseren Yoleri said that those detained in the Istanbul-based operation started a hunger strike to protest the poor conditions.

 

Human Rights Association (IHD) and the Human Rights Association of Turkey Foundation (TIHV) held a press conference at the IHD İstanbul Branch regarding the 100 people detained in an İstanbul based operation. A banner was used in the press conference saying 'The lives of the detainees are under serious threat, take measures for the outbreak, release the detainees'.

 

IHD Istanbul Branch President Gülseren Yoleri said that the detainees were taken to the police station without any measures taken against the coronavirus. Pointing out that those who tested positive for coronavirus were released, Yoleri said: "Those who tested positive for coronavirus were released without any measures taken. There are positive cases among those who are still detained and they are held in a cell together."

 

THEY WENT ON A HUNGER STRIKE

 

Stating that the detainees who are held in Anti-terror branch went on a hunger strike following the extending of the detention period, Yoleri said: "The detainees are now on a hunger strike protesting the poor conditions. They do not consume any water or sugar under these conditions where they weren't even given a mask."

 

Stating that this must end immediately, Yoleri said the main duty of the state is to value human life and called for the immediate release of the detainees.

 

TİHV Istanbul Representative Ümit Efe stated that they followed the process in absolute horror, and said: "The state that is responsible for protecting the quality of life of its citizens leaves the people in great dispair and this desperation grows day by day."
