URFA - Lawyer Gökhan Dayık filed a criminal complaint on suspicion of "extrajudicial execution" of Mehmet Aslan, who lost his life in the operation held after the death of 2 police officers in Urfa.

2 police officers were injured as a result of the fire opened by Mehmet Aslan (42), whose vehicle was stopped by the police on March 9 in the Haliliye district of Urfa, and the police officers Cemal Bozkurt (32) and Abdullah Yasir Binici (30), who were taken to the hospital, lost their lives. Aslan lost his life in the operation organized by the special operations police in the Kaynaklı neighbourhood, located on the Urfa-Mardin highway, one day after the incident, in order to apprehend Mehmet Aslan, who fled from the scene.

While the news of Aslan's death was serviced in the press with the headline "The suspect hiding in the culvert was killed in the conflict", the photographs showed that Aslan had beaten marks on his face and soil on his mouth, eyes, nose and hoodie. Again, in the photographs in the social media, it was seen that the people standing with long-barreled weapons above Aslan's were kicking and battering Aslan, who was lying still on the ground.

Upon the images in question, lawyer Gökhan Dayık filed a criminal complaint with the Urfa Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, demanding that "the determination of public officials who violate the right to life, consenting and instigating them, and opening a criminal case by making the necessary investigations."

In the petition of the denunciation, it is stated that Article 2 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) Dayık remainded, "Everyone's right to life is under the protection of the law and Article 17 of the Turkish Constitution states that Everyone has the right to live and to protect and develop their material and spiritual existence. Aslan's right to life was violated."

'CRIMES AGAINST HUMANITY'

Stating that images of Aslan's body were shared on social media and that the images increased the "suspicious of execution", Dayık said, "When all these issues are taken into account, it is clear that there is a strong criminal suspicion that a citizen named Mehmet Aslan was executed. Regardless of the person's crime or worldview, extrajudicial execution in the state of law cannot be accepted under any conditions. This is a crime against humanity and a threat to society as a whole.”

REQUEST

Dayık further listed his demands as follows: “I demand the detection of public officials who violated the right to life of a citizen named Mehmet Aslan by requesting the radio records of the police between March 9-10, who gave consent and incited them, and that a criminal case be opened by making the necessary investigations.”
