NEWS CENTER - Fatma Özbay, a seriously ill prisoner held in Şakran Women's Prison, is not taken for routine check-ups even though she has cancer.

 

The seriously ill prisoner Fatma Özbay, who is held in Şakran Women's Prison in İzmir Aliağa and is on the list of ill prisoners of the Human Rights Association (IHD), is not receiving treatment. Özbay, who has been imprisoned for 28 years, is not taken for routine check-ups even though she is treated at the Oncology Department of Yeşilyurt State Hospital due to breast cancer. Özbay, who went for a check-up every 6 months due to her illness, was never taken to the relevant service again after her last check-up was in September. Özbay, who informed her family through her lawyers, stated that despite all her efforts, she was not treated.

 

Özbay stated that when she applied to the first director of the prison with a petition during previous disruptions regarding the issue, her demand was taken into consideration, but recently her application has not been taken into consideration at all. Özbay, who was referred to Izmir City Hospital as a result of coercion, was brought back to prison without any action being taken because she was not taken to the unit related to her treatment and her past treatment record was not available in this hospital. Özbay stated that psychological pressure was also applied to her throughout this process.

 

In addition to breast cancer, Özbay has health problems such as a nodule in her throat, vertigo, lumbar and cervical hernia, and cancer-related osteoporosis. It was also stated that the medications Özbay took due to cancer caused her bones to weaken and therefore she is at risk of sudden fracture.

 

Stating that the seriously ill prisoner who has been seriously ill for 28 years has not been treated, her family stated that a disease such as cancer cannot be treated in prison conditions, and that the psychological pressure created by preventing her treatment has a bad effect on the process. The family stated that Fatma Özbay must be released so that she could receive her treatment in healthy conditions.
