IZMIR - 13 journalists have been killed and 7 wounded in Turkey's attacks against the Federated Kurdistan Region and North and East Syria in 5 years.
Turkey is also targeting journalists in its attacks against the Federated Kurdistan Region and the cities of North and East Syria. Turkey killed journalists on 19 December after targeting Kobanê FM devices on Berkel Hill in the south of Kobanê. Journalists Nazım Daştan and Cihan Bilgin, who were following the developments in North and East Syria, were targeted by a Turkish Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicle (UCAV) on 19 December on the road between Tishreen Dam and Sirîn town.
13 JOURNALISTS KILLED
Nazım Daştan and Cihan Bilgin were not the first journalists to be targeted in North and East Syria. Since the beginning of the attacks, journalists who have been following and reporting on the developments have been targeted by UCAVs or artillery shells. The number of journalists killed in North and East Syria and the Federated Kurdistan Region since 2019 alone is at least 13. At least 7 journalists have been injured in the attacks so far. Journalist and member of the Academy of Jineology Nagihan Akarsel was killed on 4 October 2022 in Sulaymaniyah, Federated Kurdistan Region.
* 11 October 2019: Journalist Vedat Erdemci was killed in an airstrike to Serêkaniyê.
* 13 October 2019: ANHA reporter Seed Ehmed and Çira TV reporter Mihemed Hisen Reso were killed in the bombardment against Serêkaniyê.
* 13 October 2019: Dilovan Gever was killed in a UCAV attack against journalists' car in Girê Spî.
* 2019: Zîzis Sînke, a member of Frî Bor Marincir Press, was killed in the bombardment against Til Temir.
* 4 October 2022: Nagihan Akarsel was killed in Silêmaniyê.
* 19 November 2022: ANHA reporter Îsam Ebdullah was killed in an airstrike in Dêrik.
* 23 August 2023: Jin TV's vehicle was bombed on the road between Qamishlo and Amude. Jin TV worker Najmedîn Feysel El Hac Sînan was killed and reporter Delila Egîd was wounded in the attack.
* 8 July 2024: An airstrike was carried out against the vehicle carrying Çira TV and Çira FM employees who were following news in Shengal. ÇIRA TV reporter Murat Mîrza, who was wounded in the bombardment, died on 11 July 2024.
* 23 August 2024: The vehicle of media company Chatr Production was bombed with UCAVs in Seyidsadık district of Silêmaniyê. Journalists Gulîstan Tara and Hêro Behaddîn were killed and 6 journalists were wounded in the attack.
* 19 December 2024: Journalists Nazım Daştan and Cihan Bilgin, who were following the developments in North and East Syria, were killed in a UCAV attack on the road between Tishreen Dam and Sirîn town.
