ANKARA - Remziye Karadağ, who is in Elazığ T Type Women's Closed Prison, is not receiving the adequate treatment to cope with the post-hunger strike problems.

Remziye Karadağ, who has been on hunger strike for 76 days, is one of the prisoners whose treatment was suspended after she ended the protest.

Karadağ was released after spending two years in Mardin Prison. A month later, she was again arrested and imprisoned in Hilvan, Urfa. After one year of imprisonment, she was deported to Elazig T Type Women's Closed Prison. When she was deported, she was told she had to be strip-searched. When she refused, she was subjected to intense torture and was given an ‘isolation' penalty for months.

Karadağ, who was expected to be released on 6 October under normal circumstances, was convicted for an extra two years as a result of a new indictment.

Karadağ joined the hunger strike launched by PKK and PAJK prisoners on 1 January, demanding the end of isolation on PKK Leader Abdullah Ocalan.

On 26 May, after the message sent by Abdullah Öcalan and read by his lawyers, the hunger strike was called off. Karadağ and three other friends in her cell have only been taken to hospital once.

Karadağ and her friends, said her sister Zekiye Karadağ, were insulted when they were taken to the hospital by the gendarmerie. “They suffered from psychological torture and insulted them.”

Karadağ’ sister said that the prisoners asked her to contact the Human Rights Association and to expose the torture and harassment they are subjected to. She could last visit her sister on 6 June.

Visits and phone call prohibited

Zekiye Karadağ said that at the last visit she could see that the health situation was not good. “My sister had lost 16 pounds and she is not being treated. In addition she has been punished for going on hunger strike and cannot make the phone call she has the right to do.”
