DİYARBAKIR - Prof. Dr. Arif NAcaroğlu who states that the dams are built for strategic reasons not for energy on Tigris and Euphrates rivers, said thousands of years old Mesopotamian lands are being flooded and it results in the desertation of Urfa.

Antep University Faculty of Engineering Department of Electrical and Electronics Lecturer. Dr. Arif Nacaroğlu made evaluations on the effects of the dams of Mesopotamia.

Arguing that Turkey does not need electrical energy Prof. Dr. Nacaroğlu stated that the fact that the government uses the constantly growing need for energy is not correct.

'DAMS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH ENERGY'

Nacaroğlu, stating that these policies are produced to pave the way for a profitable area with the excuse that we need more energy, said: "Turkey's general energy policy is like that but if we look at the area numerically, we see that the Ilısu Dam will only meet 8 per a thousand of the energy need of Turkey. Turkey does not need that energy. What is behind this insistence, which is clearly expressed at the National Security Committee is that the construction of these dams has no direct relation with the need of electrical energy."

Nacaroğlu underlined that the Ilisu Dam was built for strategic reasons, not for energy needs.

WATER IS BEING WEAPONIZED

In Mesopotamia, where the water availability is limited, Nacaroğlu said that trying to spend so much water creates great problems in accessing the right to water, especially in terms of peoples and living beings living within the borders of Iraq and Syria. Nacaroğlu said: "When you look at the current politics, of course water is used as a weapon. The most concrete example of this is the signing of a 500 cubic meter per second water supply agreement in Syria with father Assad. A political negotiation is there to be seen that means I stand beside the tap and I can open or close it whenever I want. But now the world is a whole. People are forming more meaningful associates without boundaries. In other words, I think that no one in the world will let anyone hold the key in the near future, while certain peoples right below us go extinct from thirst in the near future. So I think it's a fairy tale that people living in lower Mesopotamia could be threatened with water. So you cannot take any people captive with this method."
