COLEMÊRG - Mustafa Geylani, a prisoner in Elazığ High Security Prison, told his family that the new guards and warden had forced him to "attention".

Mustafa Geylani was handed over to Turkey on 5 March 199 on the grounds of an arrest warrant issued by Georgia. Geylani was tried on charges of "disrupting the unity and integrity of the state" and "being a member of an illegal organisation" and was initially sentenced to death. This sentence was commuted to life imprisonment after the abolition of the death penalty. Geylani was transferred to different prisons during his imprisonment and underwent angioplasty in prison. Geylani, who still suffers from heart disease, is currently being held in Elazığ High Security Prison No 2. In a phone call with his family, Geylani talked about the violations of rights they had experienced.

VIOLATIONS IN PRISON

Fahir Geylani, describing his phone conversation with his brother Mustafa Geylani, said that new guards and the warden were appointed to the prison, after which their televisions were confiscated and they were forced to "attention". Brother Geylani said: "Every time I talk to my brother, unethical and inhumane behaviour is displayed towards prisoners. As a family, we always stand by our prisoners. We absolutely do not accept such pressures."

Brother Geylani said the following: "It is unacceptable to deprive a prisoner or convict of human rights. The AKP-MHP government is increasing such pressures at a time when it is said that talks are being held with Abdullah Öcalan. This shows that the process is only a deception. If there was a process, these pressures would not be experienced. We will continue all official applications and our legal struggle for my brother and all prisoners. We will not give in and get used to such pressures. Our only demand is that the violations of rights in prisons be stopped immediately and the isolation be lifted and ended."
